The Axiom started as an idea in Oroville, California.  It’s just a little town with not a lot for teens to do.  We wanted to create a place where teens could be and be known.  A ton of people got behind the idea in 2006.  We launched a large scale fundraising campaign at the beginning of 2007.  After raising over $100,000 in pledges and donations, we opened our doors in August of 2007.  We hoped to meet physical, academic, emotional and spiritual needs.

Chris Leinhard took his experience working a t local coffee shop to launch and manage the center for the first two years.  Even though we knew what we wanted to do, actually doing it was a learning process.  Twila Medeiros replaced Chris in 2009 and helped grow our support within the community.  Wes Lobo stepped in as the interim manager in 2011 and helped launch The Axiom Coffee service that delivers to many businesses in Oroville every week.  After Wes’ six month interim stint, we hired our program manager, Krysi Riggs, who leads all of the efforts at both Axiom locations.

Krysi has years of experience in working with youth and received her Behavioral Science Degree from Chico State in order to help develop communities while focusing on youth.  She is a perfect fit.  Through her leadership, we have been able to develop and implement the Platforms of Success, scale The Axiom to multiple locations and develop an internship program, giving college students real world experience in the non-profit sector.

On August 28th we launched our second location in Lincoln, CA.  We have added Carlos Campiz and Rachel Cowen as site managers in Lincoln and Oroville respectively.  The collective effort of our team is impacting hundreds of kids in two communities, and we are confident in the ways that our communities will be better for years to come because of our concern, care, advocacy and intervention in the lives of teens. We are excited for the opportunity we have to influence students in Lincoln and Oroville, and hopefully more cities in the future!
